144: How do I configure Thunderbird for Mines Exchange email?

SOLUTION
Here's how to configure the popular email client Thunderbird (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/) for use with Mines Exchange email, which is used by Mines faculty, staff, and a few others on campus. Unlike most other email programs, Thunderbird has the distinction of being available on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

These instructions do not specifically apply to student MyMail and Thunderbird, although the information below can be used to configure that combination as well.

Because Thunderbird likes to guess at account settings -- and is always wrong -- we need to manually enter the data. Thunderbird also wants to use an incorrect port when sending mail so we will also need to that change setting after the initial settings are entered. Here's how:

In Thunderbird, click Tools > Account Settings > Account Actions > Add Mail Account (or if you are starting Thunderbird for the first time, just click the button to configure a new account).

Enter your actual name, Mines email address, and MultiPass password.  Click Continue then Manual Config while Thunderbird is testing settings. You don't need to wait until the test is completed.

Here are the settings you should enter:

Incoming:

  • IMAP
  • Hostname: exchange.mines.edu
  • Port: 993
  • SSL: SSl/TLS
  • Authentication: Normal Password

Outgoing:

  • SMTP
  • Hostname: exchange.mines.edu
  • Port 465 (this is changed later)
  • SSL: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication: Normal Password

Your username in both cases is your Mines MultiPass username (the bit before @mines.edu in your email address).

Click Done.

We now need to change the Outgoing SMTP server port.

Click on Outgoing Server (SMTP) and click Edit to change the Outgoing server settings.  Change the port from 465 to 587. Click OK > OK.

Click Get Mail at the top left hand corner. Your mail should start appearing in the left-hand column.

NOTE
Having difficulties? Bring your laptop to the Technology Support Center (CT156) for some in-person help. (You may want to call 303.384.2345 first to set up an appointment.) Or submit a support request to Mines Help Center "Helpdesk" at https://helpdesk.mines.edu

Note that Thunderbird is a capable Exchange calendar program as well, with a couple of plugins. Search Thunderbird add-ons (Tools > Add-ons) for "Lightning," an integrated calendar program for Thunderbird. Install it. Separately download and install Exchange EWS Provider (available at https://github.com/Ericsson/exchangecalendar/wiki/Exchange-EWS-Provider). Configuration of Thunderbird, Lightning, and Exchange EWS Provider to work with Exchange calendar is the subject of a different FAQ item: https://faqfinder.mines.edu/faq145.
