143: How do I use Mines Virtual Private Network (VPN) software?

SOLUTION
VPN client software (OpenVPN) is available for Microsoft Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Linux devices. To access the Mines network from off campus via VPN, you must first do the following:

Microsoft Windows or Apple macOS
Log into https://vpn.mines.edu with your Mines MultiPass using the device on which you wish to install OpenVPN. Download and install OpenVPN for Windows or macOS, as appropriate. Start OpenVPN to create a VPN connection to the Mines network. Note: Your special "user-locked profile" is part of your customized download package. There is no need to download a separate connection profile.

Linux, iOS, or Android
Log into https://vpn.mines.edu with your Mines MultiPass using the device on which you wish to install OpenVPN. Click the appropriate link to download OpenVPN software from the Google Play store (Android); the Apple App Store (iOS); or from the package repository of your Linux distribution. Then download and install your "user-locked" connection profile. Start OpenVPN to create a VPN connection to the Mines network.

If you have issues installing OpenVPN software or (in the case of Android, iOS or Linux) importing your custom profile, speak with someone in the CCIT Technology Support Center (CT156) or submit a support request via the Mines Help Center "Helpdesk."

NOTES

  • The custom configuration profile will work only for the user who was logged in when it was downloaded. You can not download a configuration file for another user.
  • While some OpenVPN clients say they will "auto start" as soon as installation is complete, this does not happen in some cases. Please start the program manually after installation.
  • At this time, only Mines faculty, staff, and students with a MultiPass may download the necessary custom profiles needed to activate the VPN. Outside contractors, vendors, and the like should request access via the Mines Help Center "Helpdesk."
  • The school's previous VPN solution -- Junos Pulse -- was scheduled to be removed October 1, 2016.
