043: How do I connect to OrePrint or another network printer from a Mac?
There are several ways to connect a Mac to a printer on the Mines network. Here are two that work well for most Mac computers on campus.
1. Connect to the OrePrint website (https://oreprint.mines.edu) and submit a job via Web Print.
2. Map a printer on Cyclone, \\cyclone\OrePrint following the instructions below.
The campus-wide print server known as “Lightning” (lightning.mines.edu) manages access to most departmental printers on campus. To print to one of Lightning's printers, you will need to know the network name of the printer. Knowing the make and model of the printer may also be helpful. To add a printer:
1. On your Mac, open the System Preferences application and select the Printers & Scanners option. (You may have to unlock the Printers & Scanners option first to add a printer. To do so, click on the lock icon and type in your Mac password.)
2. Click on the [+] button to add a printer.
3. Choose the "Advanced" icon at the top of the printer dialog window and fill in the following parameters:
If you do not have "Advanced", right click on the toolbar and choose "Customize Toolbar..." and add the Advanced icon.
Type: Windows printer via spoolss
Queue: The printer's name on the network (critical).
Name: The printer's name on the network or other useful identifying word or phrase (not critical, but will help you later on).
Location: The printer's physical location (optional).
Print Using: The Generic Postscript Printer option should work for most printers, including HP LaserJets. The Generic PCL Laser Printer option should also work for most Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printers, and some LaserJets of other brands. If you have specific knowledge of the particular printer make and model you may pull down the Print Using list, click "Select Printer Software," and specify a specific printer. You are likely to be able to access more features using a specific driver.
4. Click Add to add the printer to your printer list. If there are installable options available, such as duplexing, you may be presented with the option of activating them. Do so. Or, if in doubt, keep the default settings. Click Continue. Your printer should be ready to use.
The Apple Bonjour printer-discovery service lets you easily "see" and add a number of printers on campus. Not all printers are Bonjour enabled, but for those that are this is the easiest way to connect. You will need to know the name of your printer on the network and possibly the printer model. To add a Bonjour-enabled printer:
1. On your Mac, open the System Preferences application and select the Print & Scan option. (You may have to unlock the Print & Scan option first to add a printer. To do so, click on the lock icon and type in your Mac password.)
2. Click on the [+] button to add a printer. With the Default icon selected, use the Search window to look for your printer by name.
3. If found, select the printer. You may be asked to specify printer options (like duplexing). If you do not know the correct values, keep the default value and click OK. If the printer you want is not found, you may be able to choose the correct printer by model. However, be aware that there may be more than one printer of that model on campus. Send a test page to the printer you have configured to confirm that it is the proper one.
In some cases, it has been found helpful to connect the Mac to the network via an Ethernet cable, rather than wirelessly, when first setting up a printer.
If you are asked to provide authentication (username and password) to connect to a printer, try your ADIT credentials first. The username may need to be written as adit\username for best success. However, printers not supported on Lightning, or printers owned by research groups, may use their own credentials for access. Contact the owner of that printer for more details.
