027: Why can't I send email from an on-campus computer?
Campus email servers used to send email are configured to prevent spam emails from using Mines resources as a relay to disguise their origin. In order for CCIT to distinguish between relayed spam and legitimate Mines email, all on-campus computers must have their name and IP address entered as what is called a "campus Domain Name Server (DNS) record."
The most likely cause of your problem is either:
- You don't have a registered DNS name or IP address for your computer. To register your computer name and IP address see our Getting Connected guide (http://ccit.mines.edu/CCIT-NET-Getting-Connected) and verify that your network settings are correct.
- The DNS name or IP address is incorrectly configured in your computer network settings. The process for configuring IP addresses and network settings varies, depending on your computer's operating system and version. Submit a Mines Help Center "Helpdesk" (http://helpdesk.mines.edu) support request for help configuring your IP address, computer name and network settings.
This is an example of a possible full error message:
The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. Server response: '550 5.7.1 [email-address]...relaying denied. IP name look up failed [138.67.xxx.xxx]:
