Title: Graduate Dean Search
Dear Campus Community,
As you know, last semester I conducted a search for a new Graduate Dean. By way of this communication, I want to thank
al who participated in this process, particularly the search committee and the candidates who applied. I understand that
we are al extremely busy, and I appreciate the extra time and effort this activity required.
Feedback from the process I ran last semester was consistent, with many in our community asked me to rethink the nature
of the Graduate Dean position before fil ing it. After giving this considerable thought, I agree with much of the feedback I
received, and based on this feedback, I have rethought the Graduate Dean position. Moving forward, it wil be a rotating,
part-time position, that has interested faculty pursuing and implementing initiatives for which he/she has passion, and
which lead to us further developing graduate programs into national y recognized programs of distinction. The position
would provide interested faculty a platform and institutional support to pursue these initiatives, while also providing
support for the Dean to maintain an active footprint in her/his department. The position would be open to any currently
tenured Mines faculty member.
Given that I have significantly rethought the position, I anticipate that this solicitation might generate interest
from candidates who chose to not apply last semester to the full-time position that was advertised. As such, I did not feel it
would be appropriate to appoint one of the three candidates who applied last semester to this revised position. This should
not be interpreted as a lack of confidence in any of the three candidates who applied last semester. Rather, it should be
interpreted as recognition that my thinking related to the role of this position has changed over the past semester. I have
met with each of the three candidates who applied last semester, and encouraged them to consider applying again.
Given these considerations, I am announcing that I am restarting the search for a Graduate Dean. I invite any interested,
tenured, faculty member to consider applying for this position. The search committee for the Graduate Dean position shal
consist of:

Angus Rockett - DH, Metal urgical and Materials Engineering (Chair)
Kevin Moore - Dean, Col ege of Engineering and Computational Sciences
Paul Sava - Professor, Geophysics
Jeff King - Associate Professor, Metal urgical and Materials Engineering
